The ancestors of Wolastoqiyik believed that Wolastoqiyik originated in their traditional territory along Wolastoq, or "beautiful and bountiful river" (renamed Saint John River by early explorers). The river provided food, medicine, and a means of transportation. Wolastoq was so important that the people living here referred to themselves as Wolastoqiyik: people of the beautiful and bountiful river.
