Innu used knowledge of the environment to plan and organ hunting and fishing trips based on a seasonal round. Caribou were one of the largest and most readily available animals in the area. However, caribou can be a challenging animal to hunt because the are fast moving. Innu developed several innovative strategies to overcome this challenge. One strategy was to shoot the caribou with bows and arrows from canoes as the animals swam across rivers and lakes. Innu also constructed corrals, or enclosures, to capture and then kill some of the animals.
