Living in a harsh environment, Inuit uses available resources to create different types of dwellings for different seasons. In winter, Inuit built sod huts, which were cut into the earth. The huts were made with turf to create warmth, and whale bones for support.
When travelling during winter, Inuit constructed temporary shelters by cutting blocks of snow with a saviksuk (snow knife) to create domed houses called igloos.
In warm weather, Inuit built tents made from animal skins.
