Dwellings
Mi'kmaq societies used local resources for their dwelling. Mi'kmaq constructed wikuom or wigwams. A wikuom was framed using five spruce poles that were tied together at the top with spruce root. Sheets of birchbark covered the framework and were overlapped to keep out moisture. Birchbark was perfect for building. It was lightweight, could be cut and sewn, and was resistant to water, rot and insects. It could be rolled up and carried when the wigwam was broken down for travelling.
